AITJ, 2008 Recipient of an IFLTA Mini-grant

The Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese held a workshop entitled "Differentiated Instruction Workshop for Indiana Teachers of Japanese" on April 18 and 19, 2008, at Bloomington High School North, Indiana. The presenter was Deb Blaz, author of Differentiated Instruction for Foreign Language Teachers, among other books. She is also a high school French teacher in Angola, Indiana. There were fifteen participants, thirteen of whom are current teachers of Japanese in Indiana and two are studying to become teachers of Japanese.

On the first day of the workshop, Ms. Blaz presented what differentiated instruction is and what it isn't, and some basic information on how to get started with using differentiated instruction. Each participant also practiced creating a lesson based on one of the strategies. On the second day, Ms. Blaz continued with more strategies on creating lessons/units as well as how to grade a differentiated unit or lesson. Each participant then started creating a unit based on differentiated instruction. As the units are completed by the participants, they are posted on the AITJ Moodle site for use by teachers who were unable to attend.

For more information about the workshop, please contact Molly Jeon, ENL & Japanese Teacher at Bloomington High School North and President of Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese.
